Holben, Jay
Jay Holben is an independent director and producer in Los Angeles, California. His most recent work is the feature romantic drama Before the Dawn and the American Society of Cinematographers Motion Imaging Technology Council’s film The Mission. As a producer and director, Holben has helmed independent feature films, television series, documentaries, short films and commercials.
A former cinematographer, he is the contributing technical editor for American Cinematographer Magazine, and international lecturer, an Associate member of the ASC and the chair/co-chair of several of the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council Committees. He is also the author of the highly lauded independent lighting manual: A Shot in the Dark: A Creative DIY Guide to Digital Video Lighting on (Almost) No Budget and the compilation of a decade of cinematographic journalism in Behind the Lens: Dispatches from the Cinematographic Trenches and most recently the exhaustive The Cine Lens Manual: The Definitive Filmmaker’s Guide to the Design, Implementation and History of Cinema Optics.
